Position Description

Area:          Cumming School of Medicine, Epidemiology

Duration:   Two years with the possibility of extension

Salary:       $55,000/year plus Plan C health benefits

 

Applications are being accepted for a Postdoctoral Scholar who will be affiliated with the Departments of Community Health Sciences and Oncology in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary, and the Department of Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Research within CancerControl Alberta at Alberta Health Services.

 

Job Description:

The Postdoctoral Scholar will be supervised by Dr. Miranda Fidler-Benaoudia and will undertake research investigating the long-term effects of having cancer as a child, adolescent or young adult (before 40 years age). Immediate research projects include using the Alberta Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Survivor Study, a cohort of nearly 25,000 cancer survivors originally diagnosed between the ages of 15 to 39 years, to assess premature mortality, subsequent primary neoplasms, chronic health conditions, reproductive health, and patient-reported outcomes. All projects will involve using large administrative health databases, including the Discharge Abstract Database, National Ambulatory Care Reporting System, Physician Claims, Alberta Perinatal Health Program, and ARIA radiotherapy and chemotherapy information systems.
 
The successful candidate will work on a variety of cancer epidemiologic research studies. Independent judgment, attention to detail, ability to learn new methods and strong problem-solving skills will be essential in performing the job duties. Specific required skills include:
  • Manipulating large and complex datasets
  • Conducting data quality checks, and making and logging corrections
  • Conducting basic and advanced statistical analyses in Stata, SAS and/or R, and documenting data analysis steps
  • Preparing written summaries of data analyses including figures and tables, as needed for scientific papers
  • Leading the writing and preparation of manuscripts for publication
  • Assisting in the development of grant applications
  • Assisting in the preparation of recruitment and data collection materials for research projects
  • Performing literature reviews as required
As part of ongoing development, the Postdoctoral Scholar will also have access to weekly and monthly seminars, research forums, journal clubs, invited speakers and visiting scholars, and will have the opportunity for further education and training in epidemiology and data science as needed. Postdoctoral scholarships and conference attendance will also be supported.

 

Qualifications:

  • PhD degree, completed within the last 3 years, in Epidemiology, Public Health or Biostatistics
  • Established peer-reviewed publication record
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Close attention to details

Preference will be given to those candidates with two or more years’ experience in a research setting, experience using administrative health databases, and/or who have undertaken analyses at Statistics Canada’s Research Data Centres.
