Enrollment is based on the courses available at the Department of Biomedical Science.
The required credits for graduation are 24 for Master's, 36 for doctoral, and 60 or more for combined. Of these, electives can be chosen after excluding the graduate research thesis credits (6 credits for Master's, 12 credits for Ph.D.) and common required course credits.

However, students enrolled in the doctoral program who completed a master's do not have to complete the course (criteria: applicable to graduate students from 2010 on).B) Courses (starting rom 2021)
① The subjects in the department are divided into 'seminar,' 'core,' 'in-depth,' and 'thesis research.'
② The specific course titles and dates follow the ‘Detailed Guidelines for Course Operation and Enrollment.’
③ ‘Research Ethics’ is a required course for all graduate students and is included in the total course credits.
④ At least 1 seminar course in the master’s program, 1 seminar course in the doctoral program, and 2 seminar courses in the combined master’s and doctoral program are required. The maximum number of credits granted is 2 for the master's program, 4 for the doctoral program, and 6 for the combined master's and doctoral program. However, the seminar is not limited to the department’s seminar courses. Seminar courses will be given different course numbers for each subtopic, which will be recognized as separate credits (note that courses with the same numbers may result in fewer credits for graduation).
⑤ Students must complete at least 2 courses in the master's program, 4 courses in the doctoral program, and 6 courses in the combined program for core subjects.
⑥ For the graduate thesis research course, the professor in charge (advisor) must be specified with the lecture number for the particular professor. Thesis research credits are recognized for only one course per semester.
⑦ If a course required for academic research is not available in the department, courses from other departments are acceptable.
⑧ Students from the classes of 2016 to 2020 and classes before 2015 must follow the graduation standards announced at the time of admission (consult with your advisor separately for exceptions).
- Required Courses
A) Required courses for the Master’s and doctoral programs for the classes of 2016 to 2020
① Required credits for the combined master's and doctoral program (9 credits): Medical Reading (806.501A) and Outstanding Medical Scientist Seminar (M1932.00500) are required courses. In addition, if the undergraduate education was in medicine, then 1 course from Fundamental Molecular and Cellular Medical Sciences (806.505) or Advanced Molecular and Cellular Medical Sciences (806.506) is required. If the undergraduate education was not in medicine, then 1 course from Structure and Function of the Human Body (806.503) or Medical Understanding of Diseases is required.

③ Required credits for the doctoral program (6 credits): If the Master’s degree was not from Seoul National University’s Department of Biomedical Sciences, then the Outstanding Medical Scientist Seminar (M1932.00500) is required. If the master's degree is from Seoul National University’s Department of Biomedical Sciences, all required credits have already been completed, so these requirements do not apply. ※ The Outstanding Medical Scientist Seminar (M1932.00500) is only included once throughout the entire master’s and doctoral program. Be careful not to take the same subtitle you have already completed (even if the course number is the same, the subtitle of the course varies from semester to semester and each is recognized as a separate credit).B) Additional Information
① Excess credits obtained in the department’s master's program can be applied for the doctoral program (refer to the guide on the website at the beginning of the first semester of the Ph.D.).
② Up to 6 credits for master's, 12 credits for doctoral, and 18 credits for the combined program are recognized for the graduate thesis research. At least 50% of the remaining credits [remaining credits are from subtracting the graduate thesis research credits and required credits from the completed credits (24 credits for master's, 36 credits for doctoral, 60 credits for combined)] should be from major courses. - 5. Graduate Thesis Research Credits (not required)

12 credits for Ph.D.,
18 credits for combined※ When applying for classes every semester, you must check the graduate thesis research course number of your advisor and apply for that particular professor. Only 1 course on the thesis research can be taken per semester. - Guidelines for obtaining master's and doctorate degrees
A) Master’s degree in scienceB) Doctoral degree in science
① At least 12 credits shall be completed for master's and doctorate courses at the Graduate School of Natural Sciences or courses recognized by the College of Natural Sciences. The average GPA must be 3.0 or higher.
② One out of three thesis reviewers must be a full-time professor at the College of Natural Sciences.
① Students must complete at least 12 credits of master's and doctoral course courses from the Graduate School of Natural Sciences or courses recognized by the College of Natural Sciences (excluding courses recognized for the master's degree in science). The average GPA must be 3.0 or higher.
② A full-time professor or adjunct professor at the College of Natural Sciences should be appointed as a thesis advisory professor 1 year before the doctoral degree to provide advice on all matters related to thesis writing.
③ Among the 5 members of the dissertation review committee, at least 2, including the Chair, must be full-time professors or adjunct professors at the College of Natural Sciences (1 full-time professor from the College of Natural Sciences must be included).
④ At least 2 papers (corresponding author or first author) must have been published (or scheduled to be published) in international journals before the dissertation review.
⑤ For the combined master's and doctoral program, students must complete at least 24 credits of master's and doctoral courses from the Graduate School of Natural Sciences or courses recognized by the College of Natural Sciences. The average GPA must be 3.0.
※ Students from other departments must take prerequisite courses only if they wish to obtain a Master of Medicine or Doctor of Medicine degree (those who wish to obtain a science degree do not have to take these courses).
- Registration Changes and Cancellations
A) Period: Within 1 week after the start of the semester.
B) When cancelling classes after 1 week after the start of the semester, it is only possible before 2/4 of the semester has progressed. In this case, the course is treated as W.
- No Completion Credits for Duplicate Courses
A) If the same course is completed again during the master's and doctorate programs, the course completed later will not be included in the completion credits (However, the best grade among the duplicate courses will remain).
B) Courses designated as the same subject are also recognized as duplicate courses if they have already been taken, so please be careful when registering for classes. (please check so you are not disadvantaged later on)
※ Example: Pharmacokinetics (801.686) and Clinical Pharmacokinetics (801.825) have different course numbers and titles but have the same content. If Pharmacokinetics has already been taken, even if Clinical Pharmacokinetics is completed in the next school year, then one course will not be acknowledged for completion credits.
※ To check the duplicate and alternative courses:
mySNU login → Academic Administration → Course Management → Course of Study → Search Duplicate/Alternative Courses or Login at the Registration page → Duplicate Course Search
※ Make sure the subjects taken in the medical master's degree are not the same subjects as the ones for the department.
